Hi, I’m Bianca, welcome to My Work From Home Blog.

This blog is for mums who want more freedom, income to contribute to the household and the time and energy to actually run your home, from managing school emails to keeping on top of the washing. I share honest, practical advice for women who want to work from home, whether you're curious about becoming a Virtual Assistant, managing remote work with kids around, or finding tools and tips to make working from home more productive.

I’ve been working from home as a Virtual Assistant since 2011. I’ll be sharing what’s worked (and what hasn’t), including the software I use, how I manage my time and how I’ve built a career from my spare room, while raising a family and building a life I enjoy with flexible working hours.

My Work From Home Story

Picture a freezing UK morning. My baby boy had been up since 4 am and I was scraping ice off my car for a one-hour commute to the office at 7 am. I was juggling work, high childcare costs and a baby who hardly slept due to tummy troubles and eczema. One day, I received a call from my childminder as she couldn't settle my son. He’d been crying all morning.

With my husband tied up at work and me being an hour away, I had no choice but to rush back to the childminders. As I drove home, a sense of anxiety came over me. What if this is an emergency? I’m miles away! The realisation struck me during that emotional car journey that something needed to change.

I needed flexible work. I needed to be present for my family while still being able to contribute to the family income. Working from home was the only way. At the time, I was a Personal Assistant at an Insurance Brokers. I handed in my notice and started the journey to becoming a self-employed freelance virtual assistant. My mum, newly retired and recovering from illness, stepped in to help with childcare and I set up a tiny desk in the corner of my home.

It wasn’t glamorous. I had to learn new tech, how to communicate with clients, how to set boundaries and stay productive even when my son or I was unwell, but I made it work and I’ve never looked back.

This is What I Do – I’m a Virtual Assistant

Today, I work remotely with multiple clients. I support my remote clients with:

  • Bookkeeping using Xero
  • Social media graphics
  • Writing and scheduling posts
  • Excel and admin tasks
  • Email newsletters
  • PowerPoint presentations

I learnt most of these skills on the job and that’s the beauty of it. You don’t need to know everything before you start. You just need the willingness to figure it out. This kind of part time VA job fits around my family and gives me freedom, purpose and income.

I believe in long-term, supportive client relationships. Constantly finding new clients can be draining. I prefer working with clients over years and watching their business grow while creating the flexibility I need as a mum.

I now have teenagers and while life looks different, I still work from home, earn an income and make time for travel, home projects and fun. I’ll be sharing all of this in my blog — real life, remote work, digital assistant tips and how to keep going even on the hard days.

The money I earn as a Virtual Assistant helps me enjoy moments like this — exploring new places with my family. This was taken at the Acropolis in Athens in 2023.
